Abstract

What are philosophers for? Why bother doing philosophy? In this talk I’ll provide one answer to these questions, at least for philosophers of science. The basic idea is that philosophers can usefully act as mediators in interdisciplinary scientific disagreements. The main example I will discuss is econophysics: the use of statistical mechanics models in economics.
